Musical Instrument Digital Interface

MIDI is an acronym for  Musical Instrument Digital Interface.  Music may be composed in the MIDI file format.  These files are a collection of notes assigned to various instruments and carry the *.mid or *.midi extension.  A computer interprets the notes and allocates them to the proper digital instruments.  This process  is called synthesizing.   Most sound cards have a built-in MIDI synthesizer.
