Rolling the Perfect J

A well rolled joint is uniform throughout, burns long and cool, has adequate airflow, and is run resistant.

Uniformity is ultimately the key to a quality joint.  The weed should be thoroughly and evenly separated from the sticks and seeds.  This can be accomplished easily by tearing the fleshy meaty portions of bud and leaf away from the stock with  the finger tips.

A cool burning joint is a signature of class.  Of course smoke of something on fire isn't going to be cold, but the temperature can be greatly decreased by increasing the diameter of the joint.

Airflow is critical to all smoking applications.  Not enough airflow and no one gets a hit and the cherry will die out in even the driest joint.   Too much airflow and the joint will burn in up in a few hits, but damn, will you be high! ¦o)

How to Roll A Pefect Joint

A joint that would impress your physics professor!

Preparing to roll the joint

Hint: Wash and dry your hands before you do this. Oily and sweaty hands will make this tough for seasoned smoker even.

Of course you have to "break-up" the weed. See article directly left. Make sure the weed is uniformally broken up. All of the sticks and seeds should be removed. If the weed is too dry, it may not have been stored properly. Moist flexible weed will produce a rounder fuller joint with less effort and using less weed. It will also be a smoother smoke.

The rolling paper, blunts, and the alternatives

Use quality rice paper to roll your joint. I prefer French Lights myself. Some people roll papers, some people pack paper tubes using a machine.

Blunts are another topic. However I will touch on them briefly here. If you are trying to roll a blunt. First cut the cigar down the center. Remove all of the tobacco and then treat it as a joint. As for the adhesive you are just going to have to use water, or slobber all over it.

Better than rice paper or a hollowed out cigar would be the 'skin' from the inside a stick of bamboo. It looks very similar to commercially manufactured rice paper. I figured since it was natural it was worth a try. It smokes beautifully, but a considerable amount of extra labor is involved to extract the skin from the bamboo. The bamboo must first be spit and then the skin carfully peeled away from the inside of the bamboo. It's definitely worth the effort if bamboo is conviently available.

Rolling the cigarette full of pot.

Step 1. With the glue facing you, make two creases along the parallel of the paper.

Step 2. Insert between half a gram and one gram of weed between the creases you made. Separate into two small piles with your finger tip. Again the gummed side of the paper must be facing you.

Step 3. Hold the paper where bottom and top halves of the paper touch together. Rub one paper half against the other half of paper using your thumbs and index fingers. You are rubbing paper against paper -- do this gently. You will notice that the two little piles you made in step two come together and take the form of a cylinder. The weed is rolling around inside the paper. (hence, the rolling of the joint). The longer you do this rubbing motion the tighter and rounder your joint will become. Eight to twelve times should do the trick -- if you roll it too tight it will be a chore to smoke.

Step 4. Moisten adhesive and complete. Make sure the weed is completely covered with paper, then lightly pinch the paper into the weed. Then roll towards the glue. Its best to leave as much slack on the glue side as possible when its time to seal the joint. When you lick the glue, there is no need to slobber all over the paper. It's best to just dab the gummed area of the paper so you do not wipe the glue off onto your tongue.

Step 5. Fire it up! It's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Hint: Hold the very tip of your joint in the flame of your lighter until it is lit. Then take your first puff, this will prevent a run in the joint.
